Catcher in teh Rye 9-10

In this simple discussion of there being a rattle in this lady’s car, there is a greater idea. Everybody has a rattle, but not a literal rattle. A rattle used in this story is a problem that one has that nobody else sees, hears, and feels. In the story the author mentions cancer as an example of a rattle and Holden can relate to this because his brother Allie died of cancer and his death banged up Holden. The article is about a rattling sound in the car, but really the rattle is a problem like I said before. A problem you usually have to fight alone. I really think the second half of the story connects perfectly with Holden. Not just because of his brother, but because of Holden’s rattle. As we have already seen throughout his complex characterization that he has a problem and he is telling his story through a mental hospital. The article says “that thing that is the thorn in your side, that others can’t see or detect that you’re told to get over.”

  1. I enjoyed your comparison of Holden's feelings to the rattle, it made me consider the emotion that Holden feels and how Salinger's portrays those feelings. What do you think about how Salinger's portrays the complexity of Holden?

    1. I think that Salinger would think that Holden is immature and a good kid, but does not his problems, probably thinks he is a dumb snobby brat.

    2. Here is a quote from Stradlater " You don't do one thing you re supposed to do." I feel like how Salinger created Holden he wanted to show he is lazy and a jerk on the outside but on the inside he is a good kid and it is very complex.

  2. I enjoyed your comment, "Problems that one has that nobody else sees, hears and feels." It made me consider that going down a busy street and or being in a busy area you have no idea what the person next to you is going through. It honestly makes you think about that you should be kind always because the person you are talking to could be going through something you can't imagine. What do you think about the relationship people in public areas should have with others and the respect for them if you don't know who they are?

I was afraid he was going to crack the taxi up or something." It honestly makes you think about that you should be kind always because the person you are talking to could be going through something you can't imagine. 3. I agree with the rattle relating to cancer affecting Holden in a bad way. No one can help Holden at this time, just like no one can help a person when a car is rattling. All you have to do is wait for it to pass all on your own. You explained that very well, and in depth.

  4. I enjoyed hearing your beautifully unique individual voice that clearly shined through out every word that you placed in that outstanding post. I do wish it were a little longer though. How do you think Holden is a beautifully unique individual just like you! You said that he is a complex individual, can you clarify on that?

  5. I really enjoyed reding your post, especially the begining portions of the rattling part. But could you possibly explain the quote at the end a little bit more.
